Characteristics of the Wisdom of Kabbalah
(Modified by Dr. Michael Laitman)
1. General character of Kabbalah
All comprehension is a combination of two elements:
-
The knowledge of matter (meaning the nature of bodies in existing reality) is called physics;
-
The knowledge of form abstracted from bodies (i.e., the form of the mind and understanding) is called theory of logic.
Study of Matter
The study of matter may sometimes be limited to researching what is above nature. This study may be divided into four parts:
-
The study of matter that refers to the part called the empiric science of nature.
-
The study of matter that refers to the science of what is beyond nature’s limits.
-
The study of matter that refers to the part called ancient science and which has empiric and practical character.
-
The study of matter that refers to the part called ancient science of what is beyond nature’s limits.
Perception of form
Perception of form constitutes the knowledge about the Divine Providence. The study of matter is the attainment of the spiritual levels known as worlds and Partzufim. This attainment is always empiric. The essence of the science of Kabbalah is the revelation of the Divine Providence, of the Creator to His created beings.
The ultimate principle of Kabbalah is “One, Unique and Indivisible”
One: The Creator is one; therefore He includes the entirety of reality and all times: past, present and future. This is obvious to any researcher regardless of all the shortcomings we find in the existing reality. This research of the Upper Force’s uniqueness is defined by the word “one”. It is based on the assumption that there is only one authority and everything is ruled by benevolence..
Unique: The created beings remain one with the Creator even when they feel bad and estranged. This state does not change regardless of the type of relationship that exists between the Creator and His created beings. Even when a doctor inflicts pain on his patient, it does not mean he does something evil. The relationship between the two does not change during the painful medical treatment. This aspect of man’s connection with the Upper force is called “unique”.
Indivisible: The essence of the Creator’s attitude to His created beings consists in revealing His oneness, because all goodness, wisdom and merging are reflected in it.
Study of Matter is Empiric This is not clear, so I have done my best
The study of matter is the attainment of levels of relationships in the entire existing reality; of its forms and the order of evolution from the initial thought down to the level of this world, both from up downwards and from down upwards. The main principle of this study is to attain the level of cause and effect of occurring events. In doing so it provides the whole picture of the science as expressed in natural sciences.
Use of Attainment
The nature of levels of attainment is such that at the moment of achieving a certain spiritual level the person feels exceptional goodness and incomparable delight. This happens as a result of the person entering the Creator’s desire. The Creator rules over the world with the help of two equal forces:
-
Pleasure: By attracting the person with pleasure, it is pleasure that motivates his action,
-
Suffering: If the Creator is not willing to allow something to happen, He prevents it with suffering which is felt by the person performing the undesirable action, hence they cease the action.
-
Second Nature: sometimes this law is replaced by another one, according to which a habit turns into the second nature.
All animals and humans obey this law. Its rule therefore gets more and more complicated, and keeps constantly changing.
Nature of Levels
The nature of levels for the one who attains spirituality is similar to nature of all that lives: the law of reception of reward and punishment is obeyed rigorously. Even a habit cannot violate or change it.
Two Parts in Research of Matter sorry, I can’t understand the concept here in this segment well enough to edit.
Two parts can be distinguished in the research of matter:
-
Reality, and
-
Its existence (quantity and quality that provide the existence of levels, the way of their attainment).
In accordance with this, the person who attains the spiritual feels enormous bitterness between the levels. In order to not experience ( avoid?) this bitterness between levels, the person keeps advancing to the next level. However, such a person may sometimes retreat as a result of remembering the past pleasures.
“Klipah” Means there is No Way Back to the Spiritual
When one retreats, it is to an entirely different level and not the previous one, called “Klipah” (impure, egoistical).
Two Parts in Study of Use ? not sure what this means? Use of Kabbalah? Function of Kabbalah?
There are two parts in the study of use:
-
Spiritual, and
-
Klipah
Sometimes, by virtue of necessity, the Kabbalists return to where great pleasures are in order to perform a certain action. However, they immediately leave that place and return to their own level. In such a case returning to the past is considered a spiritual action.
In most cases, however, only those who are afraid and have a weak desire return there. They try to avoid overcoming the bitter passage between levels and get stuck while being unable to ascend to the desired peak.
Mode of Influence through Names
Utilizing influence through names is a way to attract great pleasure. Its inner power can be extended to a friend who is inspired by it. Thus it can heal him or bend in (penetrate? project?) one’s will.
2. Pragmatic Use of Kabbalah
Harm of Excessiveness
We have explained above what the attainment of use means:
-
The Creator’s will induces the creation’s actions through the light of pleasure that is present in the desired object,
-
The light of suffering prevents the actions resented by the Creator.
There is great harm in any excessiveness in accordance with the rule: “Much property brings many troubles”. Hence there is a limit to each of the Creator’s desires that demand numerous actions in the process of the person’s development. Unless there was a limit to any pleasure, the creation would be stuck with one action during its entire life with no chance of advancement. Therefore the Divine Providence uses suffering to prevent excessive pleasure.
Reward on the Animal and Human Levels
There are two kinds of pleasure:
-
One that is close at hand and does not include the notion of hope, because it will be received presently. It is called sensuous reward and is typical for any animal. Its reception is guaranteed and fail proof.
-
One that is distant but “prospective” is called mental reward and it refers exclusively to man involved in research. It is subject to pitfalls and only exists on the human level. Since reward comes later, obstacles that can block its reception influence it.
Force is Compensation by “Power of Motivation” (Not sure why this is a heading? It doesn’t refer to the next sentence)
Mental reward and sensuous reward represent two forces of the Divine Providence activating everything that lives.
Scientists’ True Criterion
Humankind is subdivided into many levels dependent upon the degree of one’s development ranging from the “animal” level to the “human” one.
-
The undeveloped person cannot wait for reward for a long time and chooses the work that pays immediately, even if the payment is smaller.
-
The developed person can control himself and choose the work that pays more but much later.
This is a true criterion for the Kabbalists, because it depends on the degree of development of pragmatism in everyone. One who is able to postpone the reception of reward can gain more.
Development is Induced by the Greatness of the Goal
In accordance with this we can see how many educated people, who could potentially be able to receive proper reward for their labors, leave their studies and sell their knowledge to the masses.
Those few that can restrain themselves continue their studies according to their abilities, because they wish to receive a bigger reward and become famous.
The criterion of generation’s development is the power of restraint that enables one to postpone the moment of reception of reward and to choose a higher payment. Such generations have produced many creative and enlightened people.
Our generation has the largest number of such people, whose capacity for work is limitless. Their sensations are highly developed with regard to restraint, both in time that they devote to the purpose and their efficiency.
Power of Motivation
-
The power of the goal compels every living organism to move towards reception of the reward. The difference between levels is only in the sensation of the reward. The more developed person is more sensitive; hence the power of the goal is inherent in him to the maximum allowing him to increase his effort.
-
The power of anticipation of the moment of receiving the reward.
The power of motivation is determined by two parameters:
-
The sensation of the greatness of the purpose determines the size of the reward. The more sensitive person receives a bigger reward and has a greater power of motivation,
-
The power of anticipation of a higher reward requires a developed body that has the feeling of remoteness.
The cyclical development of humankind is nothing but these two sensations:
-
The sensation of the greatness of the purpose, and
-
The sensation of remoteness,
With the help of these, the science advances and ultimately reaches its peak.
The aforementioned sensations rule over those people who feel great delight on every level. The delight is always close at hand, so there is no reason to ascend to the higher level.
Power of Delight and Power of Mind
Beside the aforesaid powers there are also the inner power and knowledge. Although they constitute the same thing, to the receiver with his body and brain, they are perceived as two separate forces:
-
In the body – spirit of calm,
-
In the brain – the great mind.
The body should lose its spirit, when it ascends to receive knowledge.
3. Essence and Parts of the Wisdom of Kabbalah
We need to understand why it is prohibited to use Kabbalah for pragmatic purposes (magic, mysteries and mysticism so common in the world).
There are three parts in the wisdom of Kabbalah:
-
Study of matter,
-
Study of form,
-
Study of use.
Those who study Kabbalah pragmatically retreat to the levels where many pleasures can be found, which provide them with necessary energy. We obseve this when the person with a strong desire suppresses someone with a weaker desire, forcing him to act according to his will.
Those who attain the levels that give awesome energy and inner power can influence people around them, as if absorbing them. In this case only thought acts or, rather, will and inner power. A thought cannot motivate even the most active thinker, so how can it motivate his friend? However, the desire takes the pattern of thought of the one who has a greater desire and influences the one with a weaker desire. The psychologists call it “power of thought”, but they are mistaken: this is a desire and not a thought.
You should know that this active force is powerful enough to generate bright images in someone else’s mind, as if he generates them by himself. From the point of view of control, it is far greater than the person himself may have over his own images. The fact is that the person treats his own imagination with criticism; hence it weakens and cannot function. While receiving impressions from his friend he is in the state of anarchy and his brain is absolutely inactive. In such a case he cannot be critical, and the image he receives from his friend is perceived as some ancient indisputable knowledge.
Moreover, he can absorb his friend’s inner power to such extent that he will feel exactly what his friend feels. He will be able to perceive and distinguish the images stored in his friend’s memory.
It is said: “It negates the existence of the Upper forces”, because although they only receive rotten stuff, they constantly use it increasing necessary energy more than with the help of the genuine Kabbalists.
Three Elements of Concealment of Kabbalah
There are three elements of concealment of Kabbalah:
-
No need to reveal it, because careless attitude destroys its value, while excessive revelation attracts shallow people.
-
Impossibility of revelation refers to conditions for accepting students. The person may err in the choice of his words while looking significant in the eyes of the masses.
-
Respect for the Creator. Many people failed in this. All the magicians and soothsayers who ever lived in this world came from the rows of the students who had been unable to meet these requirements. They erred and taught all who came their way without testing them. Thus Kabbalah was used for pragmatic purposes: satisfaction of lust and reception of honor. This is termed as “pragmatic Kabbalah”.
