Rabash / The Meaning of “Poor”

817. The Meaning of “Poor”

The meaning of “poor.” According to what Baal HaSulam explained, she is called so because everyone works for her, while she herself does not work, for work is forbidden in her and she is fed only by what others have (perhaps this is why it is forbidden to work on Shabbat [Sabbath]).

According to the above-said, we should interpret that the nourishment of anything is the reason, for anything that we understand in our reason that we should do, we do it and use it. But if a person sees that he is negligent in the use, he must add mind and intelligence into the matter, meaning to understand that he needs this matter. At that time, that knowledge sustains him, meaning he receives a new strength to engage in the matter because the mind obligates him.

It follows that the reason sustains this matter. This is why it is considered that we use this thing by a force that this matter itself mandates. It follows that this quality is called “rich,” since “There is none who is poor except in knowledge.”

This is not so if one uses something without knowledge, when reason does not obligate him to engage in it. As a result, each time when it needs to be revived, to be given nourishment, meaning knowledge and intelligence why it is worthwhile to use it, and it must not be given knowledge, this is why it is called “poor and meager,” and all the nourishment that is received from other things should be given to her. That is, all the concepts that one receives from other things where knowledge is permitted should be extended to her.

In other words, we must say that all the nourishment he receives from other things is thanks to her. By using and entertaining with her, even when he has no knowledge about it, he is given knowledge elsewhere, as in “Give tithing so you will become rich.”

By tithing [giving ten percent of one’s earnings], which is doing without knowledge, and saying that this tithing is holy, thanks to this he has wealth elsewhere, meaning he receives knowledge, called “wealth,” from things.

For this reason, he will have nine qualities, meaning that in these nine qualities he receives knowledge, and the tenth will be dedicated to the Creator. In other words, he is entirely for the Creator, and he has no attainment in it. This is why it is called “to the Lord.” The quality that the landlord receives, called “will be for him,” is what the owner can attain.

This is the meaning of “‘Test Me please by this,’ said the Lord of Hosts, ‘if I do not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you an endless blessing.’” “This” means the above-mentioned wealth. If you accept this above reason, will not all the wealth in the world flow to you?
