627. Law and Judgment – 1
“If there is no advocate opposite the prosecutor, tell Jacob the words of law and judgment.”
We should ask about the meaning of “words of law and judgment” that we ask of him.
We should say that when a person wants to take upon himself to draw near the Creator, he promptly feels his own inferiority and lowliness, that he is constantly engaged in nonsense like the rest of the world, so why does he suddenly want the Creator to bring him closer more than his contemporaries? This seems like insolence on his part.
This is the meaning of “If there is no advocate opposite the prosecutor,” when the litigator begins to mention his sins and crimes, and the person cannot justify them, we ask, “Tell Jacob,” meaning the point in the heart, which is regarded as Akev [heel], regarded as a Mitzva [commandment] that one tramples with one’s feet, “the words of the law,” for it is a law from Him that no outcast shall be outcast from Him. Thus, even the least of the least will draw near to the Creator. Why should it be so? It is a law. Then, it is by judgment that he should accelerate the time soon in our days, Amen, and we will be able to draw near right away during the prayer.
