791. Demand and Receive Reward
Concerning “Demand and receive reward.” The thing is that there are things that one can achieve and attain so he must learn how to behave and obtain the required qualification in order to attain them, meaning things that come through an awakening from below.
There are things that one can obtain only in a manner of “Demand and receive reward.” “Demanding” means that a person comes to a state where he is utterly unable to obtain them because he sees that he does not have the qualified Kelim [vessels] for this.
In that case, it makes sense that he has nothing to do about it because to him, this is regarded as “In order for you to rise to the firmament.” This is regarded as “never happened” with regard to that person. And yet, there is room to demand, from the words, “Zion, no one requires her, meaning that a demand is required.” It was said about this, “Demand and receive reward.” That is, the demand itself is the reward.
The words “Demand and receive reward” mean that one must picture to himself before Whom he stands and asks. That is, he must be able to show that he needs only the demand and not the fulfillment. If his intention is the fulfillment, then the Torah is endless, so he has room to ask for the things that exist in creation.
