772. Writing a Book of Torah
Raba said, “Although his forefathers left him a book of Torah, he is commanded to write his own, as was said, ‘And you, write this song for yourselves.’”
We should ask about it, for if he has a book of Torah from his forefathers, why does he need to write his own? We should interpret this by intimation, as it is written, “Write them on the tablet of your heart.” This is what it means that although his forefathers wrote on the tablets of his heart, namely educated him in the way of Torah, he is commanded to write his own, meaning by himself.
