739. Two Types of Attire

External attire, which is on the body, is called “clothes of Hassidim [pious followers].” An external attire, which is the body, is worn over man’s internality, which are thought and desire, regarded as “mind and heart.”

The first quality is called “externality of externality,” and the second is called “internality of externality,” which is the joy and awakening that one does at the time of Torah and Mitzvot [commandments].

In general, “externality” is that which is revealed outward, meaning that which one’s friend can see. In the externality, there is a grip to the external ones. Hence, it is forbidden for man to dress up more than his surroundings, since the power of honor and pride latch on to the garments and keep within man the power of honor and pride, and do not give man the strength to be able to climb up the path that leads to work for the sake of the Creator.
