553. The Difference between Concealed and Revealed
“Revealed” means that which another can see, as it is something that is revealed outside. Hence, there is no difference whether a person learns rules or legends or Kabbalah; it is all considered “revealed.” “Concealed” is that which another cannot see, as it is hidden from others, and this pertains to the intention.
The sensation about it is that his friend cannot know his aim while performing a Mitzva [commandment]. Also, he cannot know what flavor he feels while performing the Mitzvot [pl. of Mitzva] or while learning the Torah. This is called “concealed.”
It was said about this, “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, and the revealed things, to us and to our children,” etc., meaning that we are commanded only to acting, which is revealed. This is the meaning of what is written, “The revealed things belong to us and to our children, to do all the words of this Torah [law].”
“And the concealed things belong to the Lord our God,” for “concealed” refers to the intention, and hearing is in the hands of the Creator, for only He can give to man, and the man cannot receive it. But on this there is no matter of choice.
