523. What It Means to Bear a Son and a Daughter in the Work
“A man who does not want to complete the holy name, meaning to bear a son and a daughter … it is better for him if he were not created” (The Zohar, VaYikra, Item 95).
We should understand the meaning of son and daughter and that if one does not have them, it is better if he were not created. “Father” and “Son” are “cause” and “consequence.” Hence, when a person takes upon himself the kingdom of heaven, called “faith,” this faith should engender in a person a son and a daughter.
“Son” means a male, which is Hassadim, vessels of bestowal. This is why ZA is called “male,” since his quality is Hassadim. Malchut is called “daughter,” “female,” who uses the vessels of reception in order to bestow. For this reason, Hochma is attributed to Malchut.
Hence, a person must achieve the wholeness of above, meaning Hassadim, male, and Hochma, female. Therefore, the faith that a person receives should engender in a person a son, called “light of Hassadim,” as well as a daughter, who is regarded as Hochma.
Otherwise, the Name is incomplete, since the holy name is The Good Who Does Good, good for himself and good for others. We can interpret “himself” as the good inclination and “others” as the evil inclination, meaning Hochma and Hassadim.
By this we can interpret “Rewarded, his work is done by others.” When a person is rewarded, his work is done by others. Who are the “others” within man? It is the evil inclination, for then “with all your heart, with both your inclinations” will come true. It follows that “others,” too, meaning the evil, do the work of the Creator.
