521. The Mind [Reason] that Governs Man

“Anyone who is proud,” says the Creator, “he and I cannot dwell in the same abode.”

“Reason” is the primary governor in man. Yet, what reason [mind] governs a person? It is precisely the mind, when he understands that through this act, the body will enjoy. That is, if the mind does not think that it will bring him pleasure, he does not have the power to relinquish the pleasure. We should ask why a person should relinquish the pleasure.

It can be that by this act, he harms others, and others will later take revenge on him, and for this reason he must relinquish. Sometimes, when he is biased by the pleasure, he cannot see the truth—that afterward he will suffer because of it.
