How a New Spiritual Head is Born: Understanding Ta'amim and Nekudot
Hello to all our dear friends around the world. Thank you for joining us for the Friday afternoon lesson.
Every lesson builds our foundational spiritual vocabulary. Step by step, we explain, deconstruct, and clarify the core mechanics of the upper worlds.
Today, we dive into a fundamental concept in the authentic wisdom of Kabbalah: TANTA (Ta'amim, Nekudot, Tagin, Otiot / Flavors, Points, Crowns, and Letters). Specifically, we are focusing on the dynamic between Ta'amim and Nekudot.
To understand where we are today, let's trace the chain of spiritual emergence:
- The Thought of Creation & 4 Stages of Direct Light: The expansion of Light down to the final vessel—Malchut.
- The First Restriction (Tzimtzum Aleph): How Malchut restricted her desire and created the new spiritual engine: the Screen (Masach) and Returning Light (Or Chozer).
- The Mechanics of a Partzuf (Spiritual Structure): Armed with two properties—Kashyut (Hardness) and Aviut (Thickness)—the Masach (screen) performs a Coupling by Striking (Zivug de-Hakaa). This generates 3 key areas in every Partzuf: 10 Sefirot of the Head (Rosh), 10 Sefirot of the Inner Body (Toch), and 10 Sefirot of the End (Sof).
- The World of Adam Kadmon (AK): Five distinct Partzufim emerge sequentially to form the entire World of AK. Each subsequent Partzuf is smaller than its predecessor, reaching only up to the Peh (Mouth) of the previous structure due to the progressive weakening (Purification/Zachdut) of the screen's Aviut.
- The Birth of Rosh de-Hitlabshut and Rosh de-Aviut: As learned in our last session, the head of the secondary Partzuf (AB) splits into two distinct operational heads based on the remaining spiritual impressions (Reshimot):
To understand how Ta'amim and Nekudot are defined, let's look at the source written by Rav Yehuda Ashlag (Baal HaSulam):
"However, these levels that emerge on the screen during the process of its purification
according to the order of degrees are not considered actual expansions of degrees like the
first level that emerged prior to the start of purification. Rather, they are considered aspects
of Nekudot (Points), and are termed 'Returning Light and Judgment' (Or Chozer and Din),
because the force of judgment of the departure of lights is already mixed within them..." Item

What Are Ta'amim vs. Nekudot?
Beyond the formal physics of upper worlds, Michael Laitman emphasizes that all Kabbalistic terms are actual internal psychological and emotional states experienced inside human desire.
To understand what Ta'amim, Nekudot, Screen, and Purification mean in real life, we have to look past the structural diagrams and map them directly onto human consciousness and inner work.
The Human Reality Behind the Terms
The Screen (Masach) & Coupling by Striking (Zivug de-Hakaa)
- In Text: A force that repels light to receive only on the condition of bestowal.
- In Real Life: This is your self-restraint over egoism. When an egoistic opportunity or pleasure comes your way (to use, judge, or dominate others), the Masach is the inner strength to stop, reject the automatic selfish impulse, and ask: "How can I react out of love and connection rather than self-interest?" The "striking" (Hakaa) is the painful internal friction between your innate ego and your aspiring altruistic nature.
Ta'amim (Flavors / Taste)
- In Text: The primary expansion of 10 Sefirot into the body (Toch) of the Partzuf.
- In Real Life: Ta'amim literally comes from the Hebrew word for taste (Ta'am). It is the direct experience of spiritual fulfillment and connection. When a person performs an act of pure bestowal—overcoming their ego to connect deeply with others or the Creator—they experience a vibrant, unmistakable "taste" of higher life, meaning, and harmony. It is the peak state of spiritual illumination.
The Clash at the Tabur (Inner Light vs. Surrounding Light)
- In Text: Or Pnimy clashes with Or Makif at the boundary of Tabur.
- In Real Life: This is confronting your limitations. After feeling the high of spiritual connection (Ta'amim), you realize how massive your ego still is. The "Surrounding Light" (Or Makif) reminds you of the infinite bestowal you are not yet capable of holding without becoming selfish again. You hit a wall. You realize: "If I keep trying to enjoy this spiritual state right now, I will fall back into self-serving pride."
Nekudot (Points) & Purification (Zachdut)
- In Text: The screen purifies, light departs, and intermediate levels emerge during retreat.
- In Real Life: Nekudot (Points) represents the process of spiritual disillusionment, reflection, and refinement.
Summary: The Internal Cycle of Spiritual Growth
In Rav Laitman's methodology, the transition from Ta'amim to Nekudot is the fundamental breath of spiritual life.
When you strip away the abstract terminology, this process represents pure spiritual physics:
- Ta'amim (Flavors): This is the main, full expansion of Light into the body of a Partzuf before any retreat begins. It represents the original satisfaction and connection created by the initial Zivug de-Hakaa.
- The Purification Process (Zachdut): At the Tabur (Navel), a clash occurs between the Inner Light (Or Pnimy) and the Surrounding Light (Or Makif). Realizing it cannot receive more Light for the sake of bestowal, the screen decides to purify itself and retreat.
- Nekudot (Points): Spiritual forces do not jump instantaneously from 100 to 0. As the screen purifies step-by-step upward from the Tabur back to the Peh de-Rosh (passing through degrees 4 to 3 to 2 to 1 to 0), it makes intermediate, temporary couplings at every stage. Because these levels emerge during a state of withdrawal and resistance, they are mixed with the force of departure (Din). These intermediate structures are called Nekudot.
